I have responded to say what the latest position relating to all qualifications for Conductive Education appears to be. The end of the Wolverhampton course and the possible start of another in Birmingham at the National Institute of Conductive Education are the latest developments I can find.

As far as I am aware there is still no Masters degree up and running.

After neglecting the Depository of the virtual Library for the past weeks I have just added several papers. These have been sent to me over the past couple of days and provided the push I needed to get more material up.

A report by Rony Schenker of the recent conference on Conductive Education held in Shanghai last December is now in the Depository alongside its Chinese version translated by Claire Cheng. These make three items about China, two of them in English. It doesn't sound a lot but considering most information about the development of CE in China is on the Internet in Mandarin, having two recent items in English is quite a coup. If you know of others, please do send therm to me.

Getting these into the right format for uploading has taken me quite a while today - and a lot of careful work. Each had to be redone several times and my patience wore a bit thin more than once! But in the end - success. Hooray!

After doing this I checked my email and a friend had sent me a link to a video. I have just watched this and realised that I am quite happy to get frustrated, do things again and again and not work like the man in the film.

Today I had a Google alert for CE which led me to a list of centres posted January 2012 by Arty at

This is a curious list as some information is wrong and names of centres not quite right e.g.

Horton Lodge Neighborhood Particular School,

Lighthouse Have faith in Summer School,

Villa Genuine School.

I have no idea who Arty is, and why this list has been posted, but I suggest UK centres might like to check their details and send corrections and any extra information.

Parents now choosing other options?

Over the years of compiling my lists of news items on the Internet I have searched under Conductive Education and cerebral palsy, as quite often items which didn't mention CE, would appear about CE centres.

I have now begun to notice that, like Conductive Education, most of the items are connected with fundraising, rather than information or developments about the condition itself, and most of this fundraising is aimed at raising money to pay for operations (mostly in the US) which will 'enable the child concerned to walk', and sometimes intensive physiotherapy is required afterwards. Other options that parents are choosing is stem cell treatment or one of the body suits which are available. I have no idea how successful these treatments are, in the short or long term.

Are parents not checking out all their options? Occasionally these parents live very close to a Conductive Education centre and may have already tried it, or perhaps this means that the option of Conductive Education is not so well known as it used to be. Maybe centres are not able to publicise their services or encourage parents to visit and see what they have to offer. Perhaps cost is a factor as the average amount needed for an operation is £45,000 - a substantial payment, but it should only be needed once. Conductive Education is not like that, but can involve a lifetime of learning - and therefore financial input.

Can that be one of the reasons?

Conductive Education World Congress, 8, 2013 - latest information

It is a year now since the 7th World Congress for Conductive Education, that was held in Hong Kong, and the German hosts of the 8th Congress, to be held in 2013, are starting to get organised and prepared for it.

A website was established earlier in the year

announcing the basic details and information to come with a very colourful logo. Since then an English language flyer has been posted on Phoenix Konductive Forderung's website:

This has produced some comments online:

On reading the leaflet I am inclined to agree with both of them.

Running and organising the Congress must entail a huge amount of work, and be a massive management and administrative operation, especially if all the documentation, flyers, programme, letters etc are needed in what is not the first language of the host country. The first Congress to have a website, I believe, was the 6th . .Those involved in organising this put together a website containing all the necessary information that would be required in good English:

SAHK in Hong Kong became the hosts of the 7th Congress. I attended this one and was very impressed by all the material produced, the pre-Congress administration, the organisation of the whole event and of course their amazing website – all in English. A hard act to follow.

The Germans have to follow this and I don't envy them the task! It is important for them and those wanting to find out information about the event that the language is right, and it is vital for the reputation of Conductive Education. The International Pető Association oversees the event so perhaps this can offer some help with this from its membership so that after the next 22 months of preparation the organisers will present a Congress they, and the whole of Conductive Education will be proud of.

Where does the time go?

A couple of weeks ago I said that I was working on the introduction to the virtual library catalogue. This is still not finished ( though I am still hoping for comments and suggestions to arrive) as I have been side-tracked by preparation for two books to be published by Conductive Education Press in the near future. One of these is a collection of papers presented by Andrew Sutton at the Hong Kong conference last December. The other ....you will have to wait and see!

This time last year I was in Hong Kong for the conference to receive my honorary conductor certificate, and this was an amazing, exciting time for me - doing the book has brought it all back. Then in the UK it was very cold with lots of snow and my flight out of the country was not certain, but did take off, and on time! Not like that this year, at least not yet. Hong Kong was warm, bright and a very exciting place to be. I met people who had just been names to me and made new contacts and, I hope, friends too.

CE centre appears on Children in Need

I have just been checking on CE Centre newsletters and found an exciting event for one centre flagged up.

Every year in November a big fundraising event takes place in the UK for Children in Need, the BBC's UK corporate charity which aims to 'make a real difference to the lives of children all across the UK'. This is broadcast on BBC television on a Friday night and took place this year last Friday, 18 November. Various 'celebrities' take part by doing 'silly things' and viewers are asked to pledge money for the cause.

In the latest issue of the newsletter of Steps Conductive Education Centre( in Leicestershire), it is stated that this year a film of the work of the centre was chosen to be included. What a marvellous opportunity for Steps - and Conductive Education in the UK.

In the past Children in Need donated funds to the Foundation for Conductive Education's children's services at the National Institute of Conductive Education, and there may be othe centres who have received help in this way. Perhaps the film was shown as example of how the money raised last year was spent - I don't know as I did not see the programme.

I do hope, however, that all went well and film did get broadcast and was seen by many, especially parents looking for help for their children.

A help page is provided for users and any comments on this will be gratefully received as I am in the process of revising it to make it easier to access the information the catalogue contains.

Conductive Education in New Zealand

I received a Google Alert this morning providing a link to a short film on YouTube about Conductive Education. The strange thing was not the amount of time it took to download, but the fact that this film was shown under the banner of Parkinson's disease and, expecting to see a piece about adults with Parkinson's, I discovered it was about Conductive Education for children with cerebral palsy.

After watching several parents talk about the effects on their children with no mention of the centre they were attending, I managed to establish that this film had been shown on TVOne in New Zealand. Still, no mention of the centre!

The parents' expressed views similar to others all over the world and were generally pleased to have found a system to help their children and families.

Anniversary of Mária Hári's death

It is ten years ago today since Maria Hari died of spinal cancer in Budapest.

I only met her once very briefly at Heathrow Airport on the way to Budapest, but was present at the Birmingham Institute of Conductive Education when she presented the diplomas to the graduating English conductors in 1992.

Mária Hári started working with András Pető as a volunteer helper after the Second World War and worked closely with him as he developed Conductive Education. On his death in 1967 Dr Hári succeeded him as director of the Institute, a post she held until her retirement in 1993. During her career she wrote widely on Conductive Education in several languages besides her native Hungarian.

A bibliography of her work is now up in the Depository of the Virtual Library on Conduction's website and this includes unpublished papers, books, articles and conference presentations in English, French and Hungarian.

Catering for cerebral palsy in mainstream schools - how does this work successfully?

Yesterday I received an alert from Google which led me to a report in a local paper published in Plymouth, Devon, UK. This report stated that a mother of a child with cerebral palsy had enrolled her son in the newly built local promary school believing that all his needs would be met. Unfortunately, this was not the case as he is unable to use his walking frame in the classroom due to lack of space.

Before Finlay started at the school his mother was assured her concerns would be dealt with :

"I picked what I thought was the best school around because it was new and because they told me his needs would be facilitated."

As special schools in the UK are on the decline and the emphasis is now to include disbaled children in local schools one would have thought a newly built school would provide the necessary accomodation for such children. The head master said:

All classrooms comply with government rules on sizes and the school is proud to cater for children with a wide range of needs and use full time teaching assistants where necessary to fully access the curriculum."

"The school is committed to meeting the needs of all its pupils and will always listen to any concerns parents may have," he said.

The school had arranged for a specialist to visit and review the classroom layout to see if there are any further modifications that could be made, he said.

It does seem odd that this basic need was not dealt with initially and that a specialist should now be required to organise a classroom to allow for passage up and down for a child with a walking frame, but perhaps this report does not include information to clarify this.

There are a number of comments by other parents to this article which make interesting reading and are not quite as sympathetic as you would expect.

From three potential areas for exploration presented by the Foundation, the team chose to look into a therapy called Conductive Education for Adults. What they did and the outcomes are included in this report with comments by the CEO of the Foundation.

Its a shame that the name of the Foundation was not correctly spelt on the university website, but I assume it would have been on any literature designed for the organisation!

A Spanish language newspaper La Prensa Libre, has published a short report of Conductive Education services in Fayetteville,Arkansas, provided by United Cerebral Palsy.

A special education teacher in early childhood is quoted in the piece and although her name is Hungarian it is not clear that she is a conductor.

Asking questions about Conductive Education

Giving an accurate, informative and easily understood explanation about Conductive Education is not the easiest thing to do. This week I found on the Internet the frequently asked questions with answers that was put up on the Foundation for Conductive Education website in 2000.

I presume the term FAQ is still commonly understood as many sites, especially those concerned with financial payments still have such a page.

This seems to me to be a good way of getting the basics understood. It can provide succinct clear answers to questions about the philosophy, principles, terminology, use of the furniture and perhaps the most frequently asked question of all - 'Is it a therapy?'

There has been some discussion recently about the use of this term used to describe Conductive Education in the US so a new set of FAQs might just help to reinforce the facts and highlight inaccuracies commonly accepted. These could consider the use of the word orthofunction too and elaborate the pedagogical aspects as they are in 2011.

After seeing that several people have had their Twitter accounts hacked in to I have been looking at this today and am going to deactivate my account as I don't use it much anymore and don't want to deal with hackers.

After going round the houses a bit, I found it is possible to do this.

If you log in to your account as normal >choose profile from top menu > choose edit profile > choose account - scroll to very bottom and select deactivate account.

Hey presto, its gone! Full deactivation takes 30 days and it is possible to reinstate your account within that time if you change your mind.

What will be known about Conductive Education in 2211?

I have just been to see the Staffordshire hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold items ,which were found in an English field by an amateur metal detector in 2009. This is an unique collection and no-one has any idea yet what most of the pieces are, or were, except they have military connections and no female jewellery was found with them.

Such beautiful, wonderful, intricate workmanship and who made it, used it etc, is not yet known and may never be.

I wondered idly if anyone hundreds of years hence will know what Conductive Education is or was, or anything about it, wonder what conductors did, or be able to find real accurate information about it.

When I got home I looked at Facebook.

Today arguments abound about whether its 'therapy' 'pedagogy' 'a sort of physiotherapy' done by conductors or therapists. At the moment there is a thread on Andrew Sutton's facebook page about this and how conductors are implementing their profession in the US under the rules and regulations concerning teaching there.

Its a shame that a social networking site is used for such serious and important discussions where it can get lost amongs the effemural statemts on sleep loss and weekend partying.

Even so, I hope this shows that more conductors will stand up for what they do, what its called, not just leave it to a few, that more will let the world know what they are doing and how, preparing to leave a lasting legacy of what is real and accurate.

Their knowledge of Conductive Education is patchy to say the least, with some of their comments based on hearsay rather than experience. Definitely inaccurate too, as 'pain' and 'therapy' are frequently referred to.

Archive collection - first major donation

Some time ago I posted an appeal for people to send me any material connected to Conductive Education that is no longer required. The first such personal archive has now been delivered to me with the help of my niece who works in the courier business. Thank you, Dee.

This week I received two large boxes weighing 24 kg each, full of the notes, papers and handouts from the Pető Institute ( in English and Hungarian) collected by Robert Sorenyi when he studied there during 1989-1993, and a number of books, journals, and photocopies also used in his studies. Also included were some videos relating to the filming of the BBC documentaries broadcast in the late 1980s, along with the results of Robert's personal research into the life of Pető. He had intended to write a full biography but he did not manage to find the time after he started working. Perhaps one day!

In the meantime Robert has given permission for a brief biographical sketch found in one of the boxes to be included in a book that Conductive Education Press is currently putting together.

This is a wonderful collection of material highlighting a period in Conductive Education's history, documenting what was taught to trainee conductors and what was known at the time that had been published.

It will kept safe whilst being accessible, as requested by Robert.

Getting a job in Conductive Education

This week I had an email from a conductor asking for my help in contacting someone about a job. Apparently she had written six times and had no response.

I did pass her message on to the organisation concerned and discovered that the conductor was not replying to an advert for a specified post but had been writing in the hope that there was a job, just waiting for her, in the country she wanted to work in.

This made me realise that there could be different ways of approaching employment according to the seeker's nationality, experience - and of course, hope. The usual way for most people is to reply to an advert or find out via the grapevine that there is a job vacancy.

Anyone wishing to find a job of any kind in Conductive Education or publish a vacancy, should look at

Informal approaches may not always be replied to if there is no vacant post available, but most people would respond to any approach about employment if it is possible, if they are not snowed under with other things, and if it is written in an appropriate way, including relevant information about qualifications, experience etc. Other factors may also affect availability and responses, for example, ease of obtaining a work visa for a conductor may not be easy in these hard financial times, especially if a husband/wife is involved.

The summary states:

The aim of this project was to create a research agenda, by identifying the priority topics for research in Conductive Education. The research agenda is being developed to give guidance to researchers, funding bodies and practitioners on the most important priorities for research studies. It identifies the uncertainties and unknowns that stop us providing the very best service that is possible.

A variety of possible research topics were put forward and are listed in this paper.

Appendices include a list of participants at the Newcastle Workshop at the Percy Hedley Foundation in June 2010 where the suggestion of a research agenda was initially discussed, plus the members of the International Research Group, which met at the World Congress in Hong Kong, December 2010.

The Percy Hedley Foundation has agreed to co-ordinate and disseminate information as the project moves forward so I assume there will more information later after some of the ideas have been put into operation.

More information about a Masters degree in Conductive Education - of a sort

Since last week I have been checking frequently to see if there were any responses to the original request for information about a possible Masters degree in Conductive Education on Yahoo and this blog.

First, a reply was put up on Yahoo from Mel Brown about the possiblity of such a course which is still in the discussion stages. This can be found at

Secondly, Andrew Sutton left a comment on this blog referring to other Masters courses in special education and included a link to http://www.mastersinspecialeducation.org/

A conductor has told me today that she had thought there was a Masters available from the Peto Institute but this had turned out not to be the case.

The minimum qualifications necessary to teach at a university is having a Masters degree - how many conductors have this? Who else could do the teaching?

I suppose that such a course will not become available until there is a big enough demand. Doing a higher degree is very expensive these days and you would need to be very sure it was useful (as well as interesting and informative) before investing a lot of time and money in it.

It will be interesting to see what the future brings.

As far as I know there is no opportunity to study for a masters in CE anywhere at all. If anyone does know of a course, please do let me know.

Opportunities to study for a qualification or degree at any level in Conductive Education are very limited. The Peto Institute is still training conductors, the University of Wolverhampton course in conjunction with the Foundation for Conductive Education will enrol its final intake in September, and training is still available at Aquinas College in North America, I believe. Other than a theoretical certificated course for health professionals at Governors University, Chicago, I am not aware of any other on-going course.

Afrer several weeks of the usual reports of fundraising and trips to Hungary, this month ended with two dramatic stories. The first involved funding for services in South Australia being withdrawn after a report was presented to the Government. The press then revealed that the report had been 'doctored'.

The second story concerned the walkout of five conductors employed in Auckland, New Zealand in an employment dispute. No doubt there will be more about this in the weeks to come.

New Conductive Education school for Canada

A newspaper in Canada reported on Friday that a new school, the Purpose School of Conductive Learning, will open in the autumn in British Columbia.

It has taken 10 years to achieve this objective and the head conductor will be Anne Wittig, a UK trained conductor, and it will also have a teacher and assistants :

The school will be parent-driven, and there will be a fee for services as well. Esau will be joined by Forliti, who will be the teacher, and Wittig, who will be the main conductor. The three will be joined by assistants as it's required.

I have just returned from a week way to discover quite a bit has been happening in Conductive Education, and in particular, the row about the funding of the services provided at Carson Street School in Australia.

Withdawal of funding from the government was announced due to the conclusion of a report on the system and a number of parents protested. This was followed by a report of 'doctoring' of the report and finally today an announcement that the funding will continue after all.

Award for Conductive Education centre founders

Over the years I have got know the names of those who have become involved in Conductive Education in a variety of ways. For example, some are conductors, some parents, some professionals, and some who now 'use the principles' of Conductive Education.

In Hong Kong I met a lady whose name I had known for many years. I knew that she had gone to Budapest with her child and then become actively involved in trying to bring CE to Australia - Claire Cotter, parent, occupational therapist and Honorary Conductor.

Claire gave me two videos of historical interest, videos of the 1991 Australian conference containing presentations by Maria Hari, amongst others. These are now part of my growing library and very important additions.

Thank you very much, Claire, these will be preserved and made available to others in the future.

Whilst preparing this blog I came across a news item about her reporting an award she had received from the Victorian State Government in Australia for her work helping "those with disabilities participate in their communities".

Claire is the first recipient of the Victorian Disability Sector’s leadership award for all her hard work.

Conductive Education: do we want to save the history and knowledge?

This morning on the Today programme, BBC Radio 4, there was an item on archives and preservation of knowledge. This was prompted by the news that the poet,Wendy Pope, had sold her archive to the British Library and led to a wider discussion about preserving documents in the electronic age, the difficulties thereof due to sheer volume, and how important librarians and archivists were to the organisation and management of such collections in today's 'digital abundance'.

Naturally it made me think of Conductive Education and what was being done to save its history, development and practice. The National Library aimed to fufill this role as far as it was possible whilst I was Librarian, collecting centre brochures, reports, press cuttings, reports etc, but I would think maintaining the collection in this way will have been very difficult if not impossible during the past two years.

Maintaining this blog, reporting and recording events, answering enquiries is my small contribution to establishing a record, a history, the facts of what is happening in the CE world. Another resource is the virtual library, the virtual catalogue which includes items on the Internet which are available to those who want to investigate, analyse and discuss. Unfortunately one disadvantage of the Internet is the 'disappearance' of items due to broken links, deletion or being moved to new locations as has happened with some of the items I have found for the Virtual Catalogue, but with limited resources it is not possible to track everything down.

I do my best.

One question you may ask is does anyone really care? Other than me, of course. If Conductive Education is to have a future surely it must have a recorded past to learn from and build on?

I would like to offer everyone the chance to present their papers, documents, writings to me for inclusion in the Repository on http://www.e-conduction.org/ or to keep with other material I am collecting here in my 'office'.

Let's do our best to save and preserve knowledge for those who will follow us in the years to come.

News of a centre in Casablanca, Morrocco

I have just read about a new centre for children with disabilities in Morocco.

This centre of the Association of Moroccan BMI, is offering a variety of therapies/systems, including Conductive Education for children with cerebral palsy and has been operating since January this year. Hungarian conductors have been introducing Conductive Education to fifty children and the members of the Association have been learning all about it.

I have not been able to track down more information, such as a website and ask anyone who knows more to let me know and I will include all the information on my CE Centre list.

It is good to see new ventures starting up in these difficult times and I hope this one will be successful.

International Conductive Education Working Group established

Whilst searching the Internet for items for my virtual catalogue, I often come across the unexpected, but all the more interesting because of that. Yesterday I found the minutes and working paper of the International Conductive Education Working Group, a group which I had not heard of.

This records the minutes of a meeting held during the World Congress in Hong Kong involving people from Austria, Germany, North America, Hungary and Hong Kong only. No British, Australian or New Zealand representatives.

A photo of those at the meeting heads the minutes.

These minutes are recorded under the European Conductors Association logo by Thorsten Gegenwarth and it was agreed that the ECA, www.conductiveeducation.eu who have drawn up the mission/vision statement, would co-ordinate the working group for the next three years. Perhaps the results of this working together will be presented at the next World Congress in Germany in 2013.

It will be interesting to see the outcome of this proposed co-operation and sharing and I will post any further information I find.

Her son was premature and had to spend some time in an incubator and now as well as being profoundly deaf ( a side effect of the drugs he has been given)

"He can't walk or talk. He's oxygen dependent, although hopefully that might change. He has chronic lung disease, cerebral palsy and global developmental delay. He has diabetes inspidus and his thermostat is a bit wonky so he gets hot and cold."

His life expectancy is short, not much more than his teens. A heartbreaking situation for any parent and she asks whether all premature babies should be saved.

A question I would not like to answer, and a decision I would not like to make.

Update re the Virtual Catalogue and Repository

and now 253 items have been added with more still waiting, but please note that this task will be never ending as I discover more items on the Internet.

I hope to be able to post a selection of items recently added regularly to give you an idea of the types and numbers of material available via the catalogue.

A Repository has also been set up. This will include the full text of documents which have not been published and are unavailable elsewhere. Items will be listed in the searchable catalogue - a fine resource for those wishing to read more about Conductive Education.

I have several waiting to be included and last week Andrew Sutton alerted me to the possibility of another, a paper being delivered to a conference in the US. :-

Naturally it will take time to get everything up, but I am working at it as time is what I have plenty of at the moment!

News that NICE conductor-training with Wolverhampton is ending

Yesterday evening I saw the report of the demise of the conductor-training at NICE

I felt very sad. I was involved in this course from the very beginning as I had been building the Library for some time at this stage. The Library was established as an open access resource for all those interested in discovering, studying, researching Conductive Education and was used by all the students too.

I do remember many of the graduates who have gone on to do good work all over the world and enjoyed helping them during their studies. Quite a few have contacted me over the years with queries and I enjoyed editing the book Just Do It! - a collection of reports on their new careers in Conductive Education, published by Conductive Education Press.

A Google Alert has led me to a number of comments on Andrew's blog in response to the news and I will look forward to hearing more about the plans to continue the course at NICE in June, as promised there by Mel Brown, and post any information I get on this blog..

The five pillars and all that - what did Ester Cotton say?

I have just been working in the garden and thinking about the on-going discussion about the spread of Ester Cotton's principles on Andrew's facebook page. It ocurred to me that there are probably people who are reading all the comments who don't know what Ester actually said, and what the principles are, that are now being questioned.

So I have given up on the pruning and weeding ( thank goodness!) and come inside to try and find material in the Internet which might help clarify what she said.

I have found a number of documents which are based on her principles and understanding of what she saw in Budapest in the late 1960s.

Cerebral palsy numbers declining ?

I have seen a number of reports on the Internet stating that cerebral palsy numbers are on the decline and this suggests improvement in quality of perinatal care. These are highlighting the results of a study carried out in the Netherlands which will appear in the Journal of Pediatrics. The jornal website states:

Because cerebral palsy is a result of brain injury received shortly before, during, or soon after birth, the number of infants being diagnosed with the condition is a good indicator of the quality of perinatal and neonatal care. An article soon to be published in The Journal of Pediatrics indicates that the rates of cerebral palsy have declined dramatically in the past 15 years.

I have spent quite a bit of time entering more material into the virtual catalogue now at home on the Conduction website at

To me this is quite an achievement as so many searches and checks have to be made before an item is entered, that it takes nearly an hour to do half a dozen or so. I keep finding new ones so there will be no end to this process, I am sure.

My priority has been to get things up for all to find and see; this is a big clerical task. I realise that it may not be easy to navigate round the catalogue and I will soon be able to revise the Help sheet to make it better, make searching and using the catalogue quicker and easier. Please do let me know if you are experiencing problems so I can incorporate the solution into the Help sheet. So far I have had only one piece of feedback and more would be very welcome - good or critical!

The Conductive Post - a new service up and running

Conduction, think tank for the world of Conductive Education, has decided to bring

together online resource bases for those who use or seek to understand Conductive Education, those who work in it or help provide it, and anybody ‘outside’ who just wants to know.

As part of this aim, a few days ago a new service started for those interested in keeping up with blog postings on Conductive Education.

The Conductive Post has been created on Conduction's website at

and this has links to all the latest postings from various Conductive Education blogs in one place. The name of the blog and the first couple of sentences are shown in columns just like a newspaper, and a quick click on the picture above these, will take you to the blog so you can read the whole posting. This is the work of Andrew Sutton and Ben Foulger developed from an original idea from Ben. It is a wonderful service allowing access to the blogs from one place and gives a quick overall picture of current topics of interest to the bloggers. The blogs concerned are still 'owned' by the bloggers, all the Conductive Post does is link to them.

One feature of the Conductive Post is the guest blogger column. This will contain postings by those who do not have a blog of therir own but would like to post now and again. This should make some interesting reading.

This reports the work of the Centre for Independence through Conductive Education as described at a Rotary Club of Lake Zurich function. It starts with an explanation of cerebral palsy and how it occurs before or during birth due to lack of oxygen; this is not my understanding. No-one really knows what causes it, lack of oxygen may be only one possibility. It is important to get facts right as wrong information in one section of an article can cast doubt on the rest of the piece.

Most journalists and those interviewed by them, do get things right, but perhaps everyone should check their information carefully before making such statements as that mentioned above.

Virtual catalogue is slowly growing

This is just a little update on where I am with moving entries of material from the blog Virtual catalogue I set up, to the searchable catalogue on Conduction's website at

Recently there were some technical problems which meant that some entries had mysteriously been deleted. It has been sorted out now by my wonderful technical guy, Ben Foulger, so I can carry on adding items. This will take a little longer to do for a while as first I have to check each one on my list to see if it is still there or needs re-adding. Very irritating, but I am getting through this stage gradually. I have spent some time today on adding more material to the catalogue on the Conduction website and now there are 150 items.

Andrew Sutton has been looking for an article on Conductive Education published in December, and I am very pleased to say that I have managed to obtain a copy which I will let him have.

This article is titled 'Conductive Education: appraising the evidence' and is published in Educational Psychology in Practice, the journal of the Association of Educational Psychologists (full reference at the end of this posting.)

It includes the results of a literature search on two databases, neither educational, and produces these results in a table. Most of the results are quite old , dating back to the early 1990s ad I can't help wondering if the authors visited the National Library of Conductive Education (which contains more up to date material) or are even aware of its existence. Still, I am very pleased to be able to say that despite not having the resources around me I was able to track this down. One up for the Librarians, I think!

Libraries under threat

A couple of years ago I decided that I would stop buying so many books as the house was filling up with them, so now I only buy what I think I will read again or use often. On that basis my my cookery book collection is still growing!

Because of this decision I have been using my local public library regularly for fiction and any reference books I don't have at home. In the process I have discovered all the extra services available now such as computers, scanners and the facility to print and copy documents if required - for a very small charge. This was a godsend when my computer 'died' last October. Wonderful.

This weekend I heard that the Government is thinking of closing a large number of such local libraries as part of its spending revue. I was horrified as libraries take up such a small amount of local budgets and fufill a great need. Protests all over the country are on the way, I believe.

Results of searching for articles in Cerebral Palsy Magazine

I spent a couple of hours yesterday searching the wayback machine http://www.web.archive.org/ This is an Internet archive of 'snapshots' taken of websites' pages on given days and sometimes also includes material that is linked to on those pages. All you need to know to get started is the URL of the site you are looking for. It is a wonderful tool for finding material that has been removed from the Internet but can be a bit hit and miss as I have discovered.

I was hunting for certain articles in Cerebral Palsy Magazine. There were four articles on Conductive Education published in the magazine between 2003 and 2008 but I was only able to find the full text for one of them, the one about conductor training written by Andrew Sutton in 2004. This has now been entered in the virtual catalogue. Not a bad percentage, I suppose but still disappointing.

I hope to be able to track the others down by other means - if possible.

Demise of Cerebral Palsy Magazine ?

It looks as though there has been another casualty in these hard times as all traces of Cerebral Palsy Magazine appear to have been removed from the Internet. This journal was started in June 2003 and appeared quarterly covering all aspects of cerebral palsy and the many ways of helping those with the condition.

I found its disappearance by accident as I was looking for links to the articles on Conductive Education which were published in it. No reply to an email sent to Richard Koscielny, one of the founders and editors, has been received so far, so I will try the Wayback machine and hopefully that will come up trumps.

If anyone has any information about what has happened, please do get in touch.

I will let you know how I get on.

New year, new Library?

All over the world people have been celebrating the end of one year and the beginning of another. Possibilities of new opportunities, chances and developments of current projects have been in the minds of many.

What will 2011 hold for Conductive Education and what will it hold for the knowledge and information needed to develop it?

It is nearly two years since the librarian's post at the Foundation for Conductive Education was made redundant and I left, but I am still regularly asked what is happening to the Library. I have to answer ' I don't know'. I also don't know if this question is put to those that should know, those who are in charge, and what they say, if asked.

All I hear is bits and pieces through the grapevine and this is what I have heard:

there was an electrical fire last summer but stock was not damaged.
student volunteers have been recruited to help in the Library - doing what I have no idea
there is no prospect of employing a library professional in the near future.
the Library is no longer available all-year round

To me this means that the library is no longer a 'living' library. Those responsible cannot possibly have the time or expertise to carry it forward, so to me it is now just a collection of material accumulated from the early 1980s to the early years of the 21st century.

Shame. This was a jewel in the Foundation's crown.

2011 seems a good time to announce that I have started to build my own library of material to use to answer enquiries that I receive. Hopefully this will be really useful to me and others in the future if passed on at a later date or 'joined up' with another library. So far, it consists of only a single bookshelf and a shoebox full of papers, press cuttings, etc and books, brochures and leaflets I picked up in Hong Kong has given it quite a boost!

If people have anything that they no longer want then I should love to have it. Photocopies or electornic copies of possibly useful materials would also be most welcome. These could be a book, document, centre brochure, conference programme, video, DVD, press cutting - anything. I would be happy to refund postage ( within certain limits of course!)

New books on Conductive Education

As I mentioned when I was still in Hong Kong, five new books on Conductive Education have been published and some information about them was available at the World Congress. The time has flown since I got back, and what with Christmas too, there doesn't seem to have been much time to blog.

But now I can.

It is quite an event for so many items to be published at the same time and I hope there will be more to come in 2011. Conductive Education Press has plans for three titles and maybe other people/organisations will publish too. More publications are needed, more accurate information, and more clarification, so I hope there will be more very soon.

I cannot comment on the quality of these five - it is up to you to decide!

Intelligent love - new book from Conductive Education Press

Recovering from the trip back from Hong Kong has taken longer than I thought but at last I am able to tell you that this book is now available.

It has taken quite a while to recruit parents, receive their contributions and prepare it for publication.We managed to get it ready to launch at the World Congress, which we did and now I feel fit enough to post on this blog about it.

It is a collection of parents' reports about their difficulties and efforts to obtain Conductive Education for their cerebral palsied children. These cover the years 1972-2004 and come from parents all over the world, including Margaret and David Clifton, parents of Elliot, who does all the technical things necessary to get CEP books up on Blurb.

As stated on the back cover:

‘I could write a book’: frequently heard when parents talk about services for their cerebrally palsied children, and Conductive Education. This book is by thirteen parents and a grandmother, from Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Israel, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, each contribution a testimonio in its own right.
Whatever your connection with motor disorders in children, this is a book to ignore at your peril, the first collected statement by families of disabled children, one of Conductive Education's prime beneficiary groups and, in the Western world, its prime mover. These families’ experiences throw light upon questions of how modern societies might do things differently – and better – for children with motor disorders and their families, yet further reminder that progress for disability and for Conductive Education is born out of struggle.
Conductive Education is potentially for life – as must be any properly constituted service for those affected by chronic disabling conditions. Honarary Conductor Award

I have never been to a conference before so this was a very interesting experience for me. Initially I thought I would dip in and out but got hooked and attended as many sessions as possible.

It was two days filled with parallel presentations which meant I was unable to go to all those I wanted to hear. People from all over the world presented and I learned about what was going on in Israel, UK, Hong Kong, mainland China, Australia, Mexico and Germany. Over the two days I met people who had only been names to me before and was able to learn more about them.

Of course, the main reason I went was to receive my Honorary Conductor Award.

I am pleased to say that Edith Yeung is also a librarian working for SAHK. I had hoped to visit her library but the busy schedule of the congress and the study tours afterwards made it impossible. An excuse to go back some day perhaps!

The presentations were made at a banquet on the Sunday evening after everyone had watched a Lion Dance and listened to the SAHK children's Brass Band. All great fun.

My award was presented to me by Franz Schaffhauser, Director of the Peto Institute and I now have a beautiful red leather folder embossed with the Peto Institute's name containing a certificate detailing the award. I was very relieved to get up on to, and off the platform without any mishap due to nerves.

After this I was lucky enough to sit with a group of people who were excellent company and we all enjoyed a traditional Chinese dinner of soup, fish, meat, noodles, rice, more soup, more fish and little cakes in copious amounts.

I would like to thank all those who made this possible very much indeed for an evening I shall always remember with pride and happiness.

Around the world in ten days - almost!

I arrived home in Birmingham yesterday lunchtime after what seemed to be a never-ending journey. It was 24 hours since I had left the hotel in Hong Kong and I was very tired indeed. How people can do this all the time amazes me.

On the way out to Hong Kong I stayed over in Dubai for a day with my nephew, a journalist, who lives there. All was on a very large scale - everywhere were tall buildings, construction projects and a very efficient road system. He took me up the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa and round the largest shopping mall in the world on the way to seeing a Fountain display, the water 'moving' to music. In the evening we took a short boat ride across the creek to the souks where spices and medicines are sold before having a very tasty Arabic dinner. Fabulous.

I was up early next morning and back to the huge airport for the next stage of the journey to Hong Kong, arriving late at night to a kaleidascope of bright lights.

Hong Kong ws a wonderful place to visit and everyone I met was very helpful and extremely polite. Temperatures were in the early 20s so it was even more wonderful to be there after the freezing cold in the UK.

The city was very clean, well organised and easy to get around enabling me to visit most of the places on my list in the time allowed. I saw the Big Buddha, had lunch in the buddhist monastery, visited Taoist temples, went to several street markets, had a trip round the harbour at night, crossed over to Kowloon on the Star Ferry and had coffee in the former headquarters of the Hong Kong Police Force - now converted into a shopping mall with restuarants and coffee bars. On my last day I went up to the Peak by cable car for the fantastic view. Here as everywhere there were more shops and restuarants! It was windy and cold and a little misty (unless that was pollution, hard for me to tell) but well worth the effort. I was lucky to do all these things in the company of some wonderful friends - so thank you to all who came with me and made it so enjoyable.

This was all fitted in after, and round the conference, which I will talk about later.

Now it is time to unpack, do the washing and start thinking about Christmas.

This is only a quick posting as there is still a lot going on here at the World Congress. Unlike Andrew I have not been able to post every day as I do not have a laptop or notebook of my own.

Since I arrived I have met people who I only knew via the Internet or publications which has been wonderful. Of course no-one looks as I had imagined and they were probably surprised in the same way on meeting me.

In the process I have found out about three books that have just been published in English and one in Chinese. Full details about these will be posted when I get home at the weekend as I have the use of this notebook (courtesy of Susie Mallett) for a few minutes before going into the final part f the programme, the Plenary discussions on the essence of CE and the future for it in the 21st century ö no doubt Andrew will report on these later.

Congress time

Well its nearly Congress time and I start my journey to Hong Kong later today - weather permitting. It is still snowing here and I am watching the news for updates on the situation at the airport.

The above photo is of my brother, mother and I enjoying refreshment at the Peak in Hong Kong quite a long time ago. I hope to go up there again, enjoy the view and have another ice-cream next week!

I am looking forward to meeting all the people I have 'spoken' to via email, whose papers I have read and who contributed to the National Library of Conductive Education whilst I was Librarian. Its my first visit to such an event and it should be an interesting time.

New home and format for Virtual Library of Conductive Education

At long last I can announce that the Virtual Library of Conductive Education now has a new format - and a new home, thanks to Ben Foulger.

Ben has spent a lot of his own time in the past few months creating a searchable database for the Virtual Library and in the process been very patient with my requests for all sorts of features, changes, yet more changes and further additions - he has managed them all. Wonderful.

The catalogue can now be found on the website of Conduction, the new UK charity for Conductive Education at http://www.e-conduction.org/virtuallibrary

The contents of the Library currently at http://www.virtualcelibrary.blogspot.com/ will gradually be included along with new items and the same criterium applies for those, that is availablility on the Internet. Some are free to acess and some require a subscription, password or payment for an individual article. So far items included are written e.g. articles, conference papers, documents, presentations. Films and videos may be added later.

I have added over 100 items to the catalogue so far, but as you can appreciate transferring the material from the blog to the database takes time. I will add any new finds straight into the new format - in fact I have added some already - whilst continuing to 'move' the old items across.

The blog will remain and not be deleted until this process is completed.

Some people may be unused to searching a catalogue online, so there is a link to a help page containing some basic instructions and guidance.

This catalogue, like all 'live' library catalogues, will never be 'finished' as more new material becomes available and is recorded. I welcome any help you can offer in finding such material.

You will see that there is also a link to a Depository on the same page. It is hoped to put complete documents, unpublished papers, articles etc not available elsewhere into this starting very soon. At present it is empty.

Conductive Education Classic no.9

This is the only review so far to make a major critical proposal to better the quality of how evaluations done in Conductive Education. There were relatively few studies to look at, with five being carried out in Australia, three in the UK, and one in Ireland.

Why was it done?

The Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Unit of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for medical research was requested by Alberta Children’s Services and Alberta Health & Wellness to assess the evidence of effectiveness of Conductive Education for children with cerebral palsy

A review was requested to help the ministries answer the question, ‘is Conductive Education as a learning approach or therapeutic intervention safe and efficacious for children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy…?…The HTA Unit conducted a systematic search for and critical appraisal of published scientific evidence regarding the impact of Conductive Education on the overall learning and health status of children with cerebral palsy. (p.1)

Outline

The review gives an outline of its parameters followed by a brief description of Conductive Education and its origins and then goes on to look at six primary studies and three studies that examined parental reactions, perceptions and satisfaction.

It sets out their summaries in the form of a table, giving the type of study, (e.g. randomized or non-randomized, controlled, descriptive), setting, (e.g. UK, Australia), the methods, and authors’ conclusions, and then discusses each one in more detail.

This is followed by a summary of the main, conclusions, a discussion of these, and the authors’ conclusions. And, of course, a list of references. Also included are several appendices on methodology, cerebral palsy, CE models in Alberta, primary and parent studies (including outcomes and comments). All set out as tables.

It is noted that there were few reasonable studies to consult at that time (as is still the case) and the evidence on the efficacy of CE is sparse and of poor quality

Their radical suggestion for the betterment of such evaluations was ‘manualisation’, I.e. actual stating in he form of a ‘manual’ what is was that was actually done with the subjects in the intervention being evaluated (a well known measure in clinical psychology). If one does this then it may even be possible that studies might be replicated. If not, then they cannot be. It would also offer readers of reviews to form thie own judgements of how far then work being evaluated in fact merit the name of Conductive Education in the first place (not a lot, probably in many cases.

As far as I know, no later studies have taken up this suggestion.

Conductive Education books at the World Congress

Several people have asked me if it will be possible to buy books published by Conductive Education Press at the Congress.

We have made Conductive Education Press publications easily accessible from anywhere in the world and deliverable to your door at the click of a mouse. http://www.blurb.com/user/cepress

CEP is a publisher and not a bookseller with premises and a physical stall.

Single copies of the titles will be available to look at during the Congress and a leaflet to take away containing information about all titles. I believe there may be information about a book from the Peto Institute available in the same way, Susie Mallett is working on a pamphlet, and there may be others too.

Usually at conferences books are available to order, rather than purchase there and then. A catalogue or titles may be available to look at and a form provided to complete to obtain copies. Sometimes there are copies available to buy, but not often; for instance, if the congress is being held in the home country of the publisher it would be possible to take multiple copies to sell - perhaps SAHK will do this with their publications. No airline luggage restrictions for them!

By the way, feedback from all of you who obtain and read copies would be very welcome.

It looks as though 2010 will see the publication of at least four titles on Conductive Education, quite an achievement!

These articles may be collectively characterised as personal accounts of setting up and developing one’s own conductive practice, or service, or even system. Such determined and individual self-help, often in the face of surrounding indifference or even outright opposition, has been the base and backbone of the internationalisation of Conductive Education. In a continuously changing world, it will likely remain so. There is no other accessible written record of this process, no other collection of documents to suggest just what it takes to do this, none to offer reassurance, inspiration – and caution – to those who might wish to plough their own future furrows So, it has seemed a useful exercise to collect together these varied and needed articles into a single volume – this book.

Computer problems

This week I have been experiencing computer problems which have resulted in my having to buy a new machine. Not what I wanted to do at all! It is the same with all modern inventions, we use them all the time without thinking, and then feel bereft when they are no longer working. This then causes amazement that they are so important to us. What shall I do with myself?

Now I am having to write this blog from my local public library, sitting in a long line with other people, a very strange experience as I am used to sitting at home on my own. But what a wonderful service, free and in a nice warm cosy place.

I hope to have my new machine up and running early next week, and be back on line again with a new posting.
